In light of ongoing concerns regarding avian influenza and its potential impact on dairy products, recent studies from FDA research have reassured the safety of commercially processed milk and ensures the safety of milk and dairy products.

In Case You Missed It...

The Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) strain, specifically H5N1, has been a notable concern for wild bird populations and, more recently, for dairy cattle. Despite its presence in dairy cows, health officials, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, emphasize that the virus has not mutated to enable human transmission (as of 06/28/24).

New Findings from the FDA

A recent study by the FDA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed that the standard pasteurization process is highly effective at inactivating the HPAI H5N1 virus. Researchers analyzed 275 raw milk samples from farms in affected regions, finding that pasteurization effectively inactivated any viral fragments present. Additionally, all samples of dairy products from retail locations were free of viable HPAI H5N1 virus.

What This Means for Consumers

This new research provides strong assurances that pasteurized milk and dairy products are safe for consumption. Pasteurization remains a critical process with over a century of proven effectiveness in protecting public health. While raw milk carries inherent risks, pasteurized milk and dairy products offer a safe alternative for consumers.

The FDA, alongside other health agencies, continues to monitor this situation and conduct additional studies to ensure ongoing safety. As the situation evolves, the WBFI will continue to update you with the latest research and findings.
