Economic Contributions of Birding

  • 96 million Americans are engaged in birdwatching.
  • Birders spend an impressive $107.6 billion annually on birding-related activities, including travel, gear, and products like bird food and feeders.
  • Of that total, $12.6 billion is spent specifically on bird food and feeders—showing just how central these products are to the birding experience.

These numbers clearly reflect the growing importance of the wild bird feeding market, which aligns with WBFI’s mission to support and expand the hobby of bird feeding. As demand for quality products continues to rise, it’s vital that we maintain high industry standards and meet the evolving needs of birders.

Crossovers with Other Outdoor Activities

The report also reveals that birding shares significant overlap with other outdoor hobbies:

  • 24% of birders also fish.
  • 8% hunt.
  • 6% participate in both.

This crossover highlights birding’s broad appeal within the outdoor recreation sector, creating opportunities for growth and collaboration across industries.

Birding: A Pathway to Nature

Birding is not only an economic force—it also offers a deep connection to the natural world. As Matt Hogan, Regional Director for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, notes:

“Birds are accessible—always with us, no matter where we are. A connection to nature is good for body, mind, and soul.”

Birding has proven mental and emotional benefits. Whether observing birds in your backyard or on a nature walk, birding encourages mindfulness, fosters well-being, and helps us appreciate the beauty of nature in our daily lives.

Moving Forward Together

At WBFI, we are excited by the growing popularity of birding and remain committed to fostering the wild bird feeding hobby. As we continue to expand, we must stay focused on delivering high-quality products that meet the needs of birders and help strengthen our connection to the natural world.

Let’s continue growing the wild bird feeding community and supporting the outdoor recreation sector as a whole!
