Wild Bird Feeding Industry
Listeria
In the spring of 2016, the FDA Reportable Food Registry (RFR) contains multiple human food recalls for possible listeria contamination. Sunflower kernels for human food consumption are included in these human food recalls. These sunflower kernels are packaged and distributed to human food outlets by WBFI members, and these WBFI members also package and distribute sunflower for wild bird feed.

In response to this issue, WBFI developed a short information piece to give you background information on listeria and its possible impact on wild birds. You can download the pdf document here

As you'll note in the pdf, listeria in wild birds is not well studied because it has not been a major issue in wild bird populations in comparison to other wild bird diseases like avian pox and salmonella. As more information becomes available, we will update you and this document.
